James Ward

I’m James, 32, from Stanley (County Durham) I work at a drum and cymbal distribution company and over the past three and a half years (ish!) I’ve picked up the running bug more and more!

My first 5K was around the quayside in Newcastle in the autumn of 2016 and I managed to finish in around 36/37 minutes. I’d never done any running in my life and it was unbelievably hard. I was motivated to raise some money for Cancer Research UK after losing my mam the year before.

After that challenge I wanted to get better and better and keep on beating my personal bests. In the next few months I graduated to 10k and within the following year or I completed my first half marathon around the racetrack at Silverstone finishing in just over two hours. This was annoying because I’d set myself a target of sub two hours!

As of 2020, my 5K PB stands at 18:33 (twenty minutes quicker than my first attempt nearly!) and I’ve completed three sub-40 minute 10K runs and nine half marathons with a PB of 1:32:03! I’m very proud of what I’ve achieved so far but there’s no much more work to do (a marathon is still a bit daunting…)

It was a real honour this year to be included in the Fitbit #FitBritain campaign where I was lucky enough to record a promotional video with them with a professional film crew!

I am really chuffed to have been chosen to be the 5K ambassador for Events of the North and I’ll be training really hard all the way up until August to try and beat my PB on the day!
